An excellent map of secession petition signatures from Neal Caren. He found that of the 702,092 signatures they collected data on only 248,936 were unique, so some people were signing more than one petition.

Wishing to expand the Spanish city of Barcelona in a way which contrasts with the old congested and epidemic-prone town, urban planner Ildefons Cerdà designed this 19th century extension: the ‘Eixample’. Eixample’s design uses a grid pattern with long streets, wide avenues, and rounded street corners in order to provide improved living conditions for its inhabitants, which includes increased lighting and ventilation within homes, more green space for public use, and seamless transport capabilities. Today, Eixample is home to approximately 262,000 people (according to most recent figures).

Someone needs to some serious explaining as to why Barcelona isn’t the capital of the world.

Map of Italian Island of Pianosa, made (in)famous as the island where Yossarian et al were based in Joseph Heller’s Catch 22. I am posting this because a little geeky smile crossed my face at work today when I discovered I was working on the aerial charts of this island.

I know Yossarian was a bombardier and not a pilot or navigator but I couldn’t help thinking what he would have thought of me making it easier to fly to and from his little corner of crazy war.

A geological map of the UK from the 1860s. As much as I am keen on geology (I used to be a paleolithic archaeologist so I needed to know my drift geology), the appeal of any geological map, aside from the fascinating tales they can tell, is their sheer gaudy beauty.

This is awesome, both for being a map of the place I was born...

This is awesome, both for being a map of the place I was born and raised (Kent) but is also the earliest map ever produced by the Ordnance Survey in 1801. It was felt vital to map this area of the coast in order to gain accurate geographical intelligence should Napoleon’s armies invade. The more civilian friendly maps produced by the OS tend to be much later.

Via the really lovely McGill University ‘old maps of Canada’ website . This map, made by Joannes de Laet ca 1630, shows the coast of maritime Canada in a pretty recognizable way.

Of note here is that if refers to what is now Nova Scotia as Accadie. This is a reference to the Acadians who were French colonists removed from the area following the British expulsion between 1755 and 1763. Some moved to Louisiana where their name became corrupted to Cajun.
